Hunrunr Kennels was started upon my retirement from
the construction trades. My two daughters Becky and Deb, became involved because of their love of animals. They saw how much fun I had with the dogs and they wanted to join in.
I have hunted on the long side of 60 years, with about every breed of canine you can imagine. Some were good ones and some not so good. There have been those with long tails, short tails, and no tails at all as well as retrievers that pointed and pointers that retrieved.
I got a puppy a few years back as a stud fee, and she looked like she would be a dandy. My granddaughter named her Shelly and when she was four months old, I started shooting little "tweety" birds for her to retrieve. She was so proud to bring those little birds to me!
When she was five and a half months old my daughters and I ventured out to hunt Hungarian Partridge. The first Hun I was lucky enough to get on the ground, this little puppy ran out there for the retrieve just like she had practiced. What a surprise to see such a big bird! Shelly knew in an instant this was no tweety bird!
She wasn't sure how to go about bringing it to me. She approached it very cautiously, hair
raising up on her neck, as if it may attack her. As I knelt down to encourage her to fetch, she looked at me, then back at the bird. She gingerly took it by the neck and turned to come to me. The only problem was she kept stepping on it. Shelly
was too eager to please me to give up and so she tried different methods of holding on and dragging it. Soon she discovered she could backup with it and it wouldn't get in the way. It
took about 10 minutes but she finally laid that bird in my hand. Oh, she was proud and so was I! I made a comment to the girls that she was going to
be my little "Hun" runner.
When it was time to renew the license plates on my hunting pickup, my kids had special plates made that read:
HUNRUNR
That was some time ago and Shelly went on to be a great dog. She has passed on now, but I'm sure she is somewhere up in dog heaven running Huns and having fun.
I have two daughters and a son. We all hunt together, sharing some great shots and a few miserable misses. There is just nothing like a family that hunts together.
If you ever see a pickup with HUNRUNR plates you know its me and the kids out doing what we do best. . . hunting, having fun, and sharing life.
